AOL instant Messenger (AIM) service is an online service that lets you communicate with family, friends and co-workers in real time. AOL AIM lets you see when your buddies are online and available to instant message. The newest version of AOL IM let's you to take instant messaging to the next level. You don't even have to be a member of AOL, and best of all, it's free!

How To Disable AOL IM Catcher

To disable your AOL IM Catcher simply click the "Setup" button that is displayed on your Buddy List window, then select the "IM Settings" button, select the "General Buddy tab, un-select the box that reads "Use The IM Catcher Organizer to Capture IMs From Unknown Senders" (this should be the very last box), and then select the "Save" button to save your new settings.

Getting started using AOL Instant Messenger service is easy. You just need a computer with an internet connection that allows full Internet usage--not just a free email service. Then download AOL AIM software from the AOL web site, install it, and start communicating.

AOL AIM Buddy Lists

How can you stay in touch with your buddies? Use AIM Express. This service lets you send instant messages directly from a Web browser, such as Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer, to anyone who has registered for AOL Instant Messenger or who uses the America Online service. AIM Express doesn't cost a thing. Just download, register, and go. To use AIM Express, you must be a registered AIM user or subscribe to America Online.

AOL AIM Buddy Lists

When your AOL Instant Messenger software is running, it displays your Buddy List. A Buddy List is a window that shows all your buddies --friends, family, coworkers, and so on -- who are signed on to AOL, CompuServe, or AOL IM. Whenever they sign on, their screen names appear in your Buddy List, and you can communicate with them instantly.

AOL AIM Buddy Lists

One of AOL AIM's new features is Screen Name Linking. This feature lets you IM under multiple identities, say, your business screen name versus your "after hours" persona, even at the same time -- and no one will know your secret. America Online Instant Messenger Screen Name linking allows you to be logged on with all your AIM identities at the same time, send and receive IM's and toggle between your Buddy Lists all from one window. This feature is only available in AIM versions 5.5 or later.

The latest versions of AOL Instant Messenger now feature Video IM. Now, not only can you chat with your friends & family, you can actually put real-time video to the IMs. Video IM draws video from your webcam and the video is shown as part of your AOL IM experience.

AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) service is a great tool and great fun, but what if you get someone sending messages that you'd rather not hear from? Just like with AOL email, you can block AOL AIM screen names you specify to keep them from contacting you.

Some people like AOL Instant Messenger service so much they decide to become AOL members. You can bring your AOL AIM screen name with you when you sign up. While you're registering your AOL account, just make sure to select the "You are an AOL Instant Messenger user and you want to create an AOL account" option to convert your AIM Screen Name to an AOL account.
